National Clean-Up Day in Trans Nzoia County marked the culmination of Mazingira Week

The National Clean-Up Day in Trans Nzoia County marked the culmination of Mazingira Week, with 47 counties participating in the nationwide exercise.
Speaking on behalf of the Principal Secretary, Dr. Eng. Festus K Ng’eno, MIEK, CBS, Environment Secretary Dr. Selly Kimosop emphasized that environmental clean-ups go beyond litter collection. They are acts of public health, keep waterways clear, and restore dignity to shared spaces. She urged Kenyans to take personal responsibility for their surroundings, noting that Mazingira Day should inspire lasting environmental action beyond a single day.
Dr. Kimosop also called on Kenyans to embrace proper waste segregation, reuse, recycling, and recovery in line with the Sustainable Waste Management Act, 2022, and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) principles. She encouraged the country to view waste as a valuable resource and embrace the circular economy, where agricultural residues can be converted into clean energy while creating green jobs.
She further acknowledged the important contribution of waste pickers, youth-led waste enterprises, community groups, and sanitation workers in promoting sustainable waste management and keeping communities clean.
On the other hand, Nema Kenya Chairman Mr. Emilio Mugo delivered CS Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa speech, commending residents for taking action to clean their towns, markets, and public spaces. He reiterated the need to go beyond litter collection towards building a cleaner, healthier Kenya where waste is recognised as a resource.
In her remarks, the CS noted that Trans Nzoia generates over 108 tonnes of waste weekly, approximately 70% of which is organic. This presents opportunities for composting, biogas production, and green job creation.
In attendance were NEMA DG Dr, Mamo B. Mamo, Trans Nzoia CECM, Mr, Robert Wamalwa, Trans Nzoia County Commissioner, Mr. Hussein Alasow Hussein, and government representaives from both County and National level.
