The Eldoret–Iten Water Fund (EIWF) is a watershed conservation initiative aimed at strengthening water security, restoring degraded landscapes and improving climate resilience in catchment areas supplying Eldoret and Iten.

Background

Running from March 2022 to March 2027, the project is supported by USD 2.63 million from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and USD 24.77 million in co-financing. It is executed by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), working with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, through the State Department for Environment and Climate Change, county governments and other partners.

The project promotes forest restoration, agroforestry, wetland conservation and sustainable farming practices to protect water resources and improve community livelihoods.

The project targets 120,000 hectares under improved management and improved livelihoods for 130,000 people. Progress reported in 2026 includes 15,000 hectares of forest restoration, 3,500 hectares under agroforestry and 425.8 hectares of wetlands restored. The initiative has also reached over 42,000 smallholder farming households and established river and biodiversity monitoring systems. Notably, the project employs drone technology, automated river monitoring stations and a digital dashboard to track restoration progress and environmental outcomes. Its consistent monthly and quarterly reporting to the State Department supports effective oversight, accountability and evidence-based decision-making.
