Placeholder image

SSGP implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), supports community-led environmental conservation and sustainable development in Kenya.

Background

The programme's priority landscapes have included the Kenya Lakes System in the Great Rift Valley, the Sacred Mijikenda Kaya Forests in Kilifi and Kwale counties, the southern Kenya marine ecosystem and northern Kenya's arid rangelands. Since its inception in Kenya in 1993, the programme had, as of 2024, supported 389 projects with USD 13.39 million in GEF grants, mobilising an additional USD 11.34 million in co-financing. These interventions have contributed to ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods and community empowerment.
