India- Kenya Environment Cooperation

The Cabinet Secretary for Environment Climate Change and Forestry Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa EGH hosted the Indian High Commissioner to Kenya Dr. Adarsh Swaika to discuss deepening the environmental partnership between the two nations.

The two leaders highlighted the strong synergy between Kenya’s 15 Billion Tree Initiative and India’s ‘Plant in the Name of Your Mother’ program. Both initiatives emphasize the power of cultural and personal connections to motivate environmental stewardship. To mark this commitment, the High Commissioner announced that India is planting 500,000 trees in the Amboseli Conservancy.

Dr. Barasa reaffirmed the importance of securing climate financing for the Global South, noting the central advocacy role played by President William Samoei Ruto. The leaders agreed that Kenya and India must align their environmental goals and establish clear baselines to ensure a unified approach in global climate negotiations.

Director of Waste Management ,Mr. Molu Wato pointed to the potential for Public Private Partnerships in waste infrastructure. The conversation focused on adopting Indian expertise in E-waste management, composting, and the implementation of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) at the county and sub county levels.

Mr. Mathias Chemonges also addressed the significance of World Bamboo Day. Given India’s status as a developed bamboo growing economy, Kenya looks to adopt Indian best practices to foster its own bamboo sector. The meeting concluded with a consensus to establish a formal Memorandum of Understanding on environmental cooperation and to foster direct research collaboration between institutions in both countries.
